Self defense for girls

the girl

By egarc2 (Learning to kick your ass!)

On 16 December 2012 a female Physiotherapy intern was beaten and gang raped in Delhi. She died from her injuries thirteen days later while undergoing emergency treatment in Singapore for brain and gastrointestinal damage. You can read more details about this tragic incident here: 2012 Delhi gang rape case

Public protests took place in New Delhi as well as in all over India. Protests have occurred online as well on the social networking sites like Facebook. It is very good thing that people came out to support the unfortunate girl. But what we learned from this incidence? And this is not the first time. It is happening all around the world since the beginning of humanity. So my question is how many people encouraged their daughters to join self defense training after this incident?

Recently one of my friend was talking with me about this incident. I asked him why don’t you enroll your kids to self defense class? He replied that feminine power is weaker than masculine power. What a great thought. I asked him what will be the result if every woman in the world hold unto this belief? There is a great quote in the movie ‘Life of Pi’.

“Life will defend itself no matter how small it is.” ~Yann Martel, (Life of Pi, Movie)

Wing Chun is developed by a young woman.

The largest influence on Bruce Lee’s martial arts development was his study of Wing Chun. The common legend as told by Yip Man (Lee began training in Wing Chun at the age of 13 under the Wing Chun teacher Yip Man in 1954)  involves the young woman Yim Wing-chun who was the first master of the martial art bearing her name Wing-chun. Bruce Lee’s basic style was Wing Chun and it was developed by a woman. Latter Bruce Lee developed his own concept of fighting namely ‘Jeet Kune Do’.

So I told my friend that I don’t believe in your statement that women are weaker than a man. If you teach them proper techniques of fighting then they will certainly become more powerful than any man. How many muggers or attackers practice martial arts? They may carry weapons but most of them are not trained fighters.

I am not saying that it is easy to protect yourself in a street attack when you face 4-5 attackers. It is difficult but IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE!

“The Jiu Jitsu that I created was designed to give the weak ones a chance to face the heavy and the strong”. ~Grand Master Helio Gracie

Yes, with proper techniques you can beat a stronger opponent.

Second thing use your creative brain, use your imagination and find out how you can use cloths, book, pen, keys, umbrella, plastic bottles, purse, cell phone etc like a weapon. You can not carry a gun or knife because it is illegal so you have to learn how to use keys and pens like a weapon. You have to develop a mindset. You have to prepare your mind before something bad happens to you. Ask yourself if someone attacks you in this way then how will you protect yourself?

You can react speedily only if your mind is alert and trained.

Situational alertness

Situational alertness is very important. Always scan the area and keep moving your eyes. This kind of alertness should function at a sub-conscious level working at all times. You have to train yourself for this. Always be in the present moment and look around. Never get lost in your thoughts or conversation when you are on the streets.

You can avoid the element of surprise only if you maintain your alertness and constantly examine the surrounding.  If you are alert then you can identify a person or situation even before something bad happens to you and you get the time to prepare yourself or run away. If you are alert and attentive then you will not enter into any dangerous situation blindly or unconsciously.

Never trust unknown people. Your body constantly send you signals of comfort or un-comfort. If your sub conscious mind sense any danger then suddenly it will send the uncomfortable signals to your body. You can notice them only if you are alert. Watching multiple sightings of the same person or persons is the best way to avoid becoming a victim.

Change your beliefs.

Always believe that you are strong and powerful and your mind will find ways to support your belief. Eye-gouging and a knee to the groin will make a stronger opponent instantly weak.

Recently I was watching a DVD of Krav Maga and I noticed that almost every technique was ending on a groin kick. So the point is targeting attacks to the body’s most vulnerable points, such as: the eyes, neck/throat, face, solar plexus, groin, ribs, knee, foot, fingers, etc.  Also maintain awareness of surroundings while dealing with the threat in order to look for escape routes, further attackers, objects that could be used to defend or help attack etc.

I also recommend specially to all girls who are reading this post to watch the movie ‘Enough’. It stars Jennifer Lopez as Slim, an abused wife who learns to fight back.

I’m not against learning music or dance but learning self defense should be your first priority. If you practice punching and kicking even for three to six months you will get enough confidence. It should be your regular habit. Elbows and knees are good weapons in close combat. Learn how to use your elbows and knees in fighting. You don’t need to learn complicated moves. Learn simple ways to escape from holds, grabs, collar grabs, bear hug, punching and kicking. Even if you learn ten techniques and practice them for months and years then you will be able to defend yourself from most of the attacks.

It will be better if you could find a good trainer or self defense class in your city. If there are no trainers in your town then you can find tons of videos on YouTube about self defense. Watch those videos and pick up some easy techniques and practice them with your friends and family members. Confidence is more important then techniques. Believe in your strength and ability. Government, politicians and police are not going to protect you. You will have to learn to protect yourself.
